Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Filling
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cardamom
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Topping
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- Additional orange zest for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm milk (110°F) and let it sit for 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Make Dough: Add the granulated sugar, egg, melted butter, and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add the all-purpose flour while mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 6 to 8 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
- Prepare Filling: In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, brown sugar, ground cardamom, orange zest, cinnamon, and vanilla extract, mixing well to create the filling.
- Roll Out Dough: Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a 12×16-inch rectangle.
- Add Filling: Spread the prepared filling evenly over the rolled-out dough surface.
- Form Buns: Roll up the dough tightly from the long side into a log shape and slice it into 12 even pieces.
- Second Rise: Place the sliced buns into a greased muffin tin or baking dish, cover them, and let rise again for 30 minutes.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the buns for 20 to 25 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
- Finish and Serve: While the buns are still warm, sprinkle with granulated sugar and additional orange zest if desired. Serve warm for best flavor.
Notes
- These buns are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- Reheat slightly before serving to refresh their softness and flavor.
- For added texture and flavor, try incorporating chopped nuts into the filling.
